HARRISBURG, Oct. 17 –State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-Lawrence/Beaver/Butler, is pleased to announce the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority has awarded Ellwood City a grant to aid with its energy-efficient lighting plans.

The grant for $168,750 will be used to replace 289 out of 796 existing street lamps with LED lighting. LED lighting is specially designed to be energy efficient, and just as bright as the old metal halide fixtures currently in Ellwood City. The new lighting also will be maintenance-free for up to 20 years.

The lighting contract will be awarded by Ellwood City to a local start-up company, Appalachian Lighting Systems Inc., located in Ellwood City.

“This is a win-win situation,” Gibbons said. “Not only will the city benefit from the latest in energy technology, but the grant also will be a huge shot in the arm for a local company hoping to get its first big contract with the city.”

The project also will include the development of a city energy management plan and the mailing of energy-efficiency brochures to residents.
